FRONTING (A LATE NIGHT PREVIEW)
Photos: Jeaneen Lund
This movement is for Stevie Wonder, Mick Jagger, Tina Turner, Eminem, Ian Curtis, Joe Cocker, Fred Durst, Avril Lavigne, Gunnar Ragnarsson, Kata Mogensen, Högni Egilsson, David Byrne..."
FRONTING is a double bill of solos, which take as their starting point the act of paying tribute to those front men and front women that don’t so much dance – as move, wobble and shake.
Danced by two front men (Gunnar Ragnarsson of Grísalappalísa) and one front woman (Kata Mogensen of Mammút), FRONTING is a tribute act that pays special attention to the legacy of bodies and movements of those that stand at the front, as well as the bodies and movements of those that stand before them.
FRONTING is previewing this August at RDF#12, before officially premiering at RDF#13 this November.
Conceived and realised by: Ásrún Magnúsdóttir and Alexander Roberts in collaboration with Gunnar Ragnarsson and Kata Mogensen.
Performed by: Gunnar Ragnarsson and Kata Mogensen.
The project is supported by the Ministry of Education and Culture and Tjarnarbíó
Ásrún Magnúsdóttir was born in Reykjavík in the late eighties. She has a B.A. degree in dance from Icelandic Academy of the Arts. She wants to stretch the dominant modes of dance and has created many works; some have been considered good and have been nominated for interesting awards while others have not had a very high profile. She has also travelled quite a lot. At the moment she is interested in working with people that have not thought so much about dance or dancing and trying to make invisible choreographies visible.
Alexander Roberts is an artist, curator and the co-director of Reykjavík Dance Festival. Starting in music – playing in punk and hardcore bands – Alexander developed an interest in bodies, in the idea that aesthetic movements can also be a political movements, in Live Art, performance, dancing and choreography. Now – Alexander works predominantly as a curator and as a producer of Live Art. But also sometimes as a dramaturgical advisor, a pedagogue, and as an artist (most typically in collaboration with others).
